Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on Monday a $10 billion investment to build new data centers in Ohio by 2030. This move brings Amazon’s total investment in the state to over $23 billion, solidifying Ohio’s status as a growing technology hub in the Midwest.

Expansion of Cloud and AI Infrastructure

The new data centers will house computer servers, storage drives, and networking equipment to support cloud computing services, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s office emphasized the importance of these investments, highlighting their role in advancing technological infrastructure across the state.

“These are significant investments from AWS that support Ohio’s growing reputation as the tech hub of the Midwest,” said Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Amazon’s $10 billion commitment builds on its previous investments:

  • $7.8 billion announced last year.
  • $6 billion previously invested.

Combined, these efforts place AWS as one of Ohio’s largest tech investors, second only to Intel’s $28-billion semiconductor factory development in New Albany. Since 2015, AWS has contributed over $10.3 billion to Ohio’s economy and supports more than 4,760 jobs annually.

“This expanded investment is expected to create new, well-paying jobs, boost Ohio's GDP, and further cement our partnership with the state,” said Roger Wehner, AWS vice president of economic development.

Where Will the Data Centers Be Built?

While AWS has not finalized locations, it plans to extend its data center footprint beyond central Ohio. This follows a growing trend, with tech giants like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Cologix also investing heavily in the region.

However, Amazon’s plans remain contingent on securing an energy agreement. Data centers are energy-intensive operations, and AWS is currently negotiating power supply and pricing terms with American Electric Power.

“These projects are still in early stages,” said Amazon spokesperson Lindsay Bednar. “We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.”

The Growing Tech Presence in Ohio

Central Ohio has become a magnet for data center investments, with a 2022 report ranking the Columbus area among the top 10 data center hubs in the U.S. While more recent rankings have placed it outside the top 10, the influx of investments signals that Ohio remains a competitive tech destination.

With Amazon’s latest commitment, Ohio continues to attract major players in cloud computing, AI, and digital infrastructure—fueling economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation across the state.
