American Airlines Announces Free Wi-Fi in 2026

In a significant move that reflects a broader industry trend, American Airlines has announced it will begin offering complimentary inflight Wi-Fi to its AAdvantage loyalty program members starting in January. Sponsored by AT&T, this initiative aligns American with other major U.S. carriers that are moving toward making internet access a standard onboard amenity—at least for their most loyal customers.
Currently, American Airlines charges over $20 for Wi-Fi on many of its flights. But beginning next year, passengers flying on aircraft equipped with Intelsat or Viasat satellite internet—expected to cover about 90% of American’s fleet—will enjoy high-speed connectivity at no cost. However, some of the airline’s older Boeing wide-body planes will remain outside the free Wi-Fi offering, though service will still be available for a fee.
This transition follows a pilot program American had been testing on select routes and complements its plans to equip 500 regional aircraft with high-speed internet by the end of 2025.
The announcement adds pressure on holdouts like Southwest Airlines, which continues to charge for inflight Wi-Fi, even as other major players in the space innovate. JetBlue has long provided free internet for all passengers, while Delta Air Lines rolled out complimentary service in 2023 for its SkyMiles members. United Airlines is also ramping up its connectivity capabilities, outfitting its fleet with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite Wi-Fi to provide free access for MileagePlus loyalty members.
As more airlines embrace free onboard internet as a loyalty incentive, expectations for seamless, high-speed connectivity in the skies are quickly becoming the new normal. The race for passenger satisfaction is no longer just about legroom and snacks—it’s about staying online, even at 35,000 feet.
