Anthropic has begun rolling out a new voice mode for its Claude chatbot app, allowing users to engage in fully spoken conversations with Claude. Currently in beta and available only in English, the feature is gradually being made available to mobile users over the coming weeks, the company announced via X and its website.

According to Anthropic, the voice functionality is powered by the company’s Claude Sonnet 4 model. Users can now speak to Claude and hear it respond, offering a hands-free way to interact with the AI — ideal for moments when typing isn’t convenient.

“Voice mode transforms how you interact with Claude,” Anthropic notes, “by displaying key points on-screen as Claude speaks and allowing you to hear responses in real time.”

The voice interface supports switching between voice and text on the fly, and includes conversation transcripts and summaries. Users can also select from five distinct voice options to personalize their experience. Beyond basic queries, the voice mode allows interactions with documents and images, adding versatility to everyday tasks.

Voice Mode Comes with Limits

While the feature is a major usability upgrade, it does have constraints. Voice chats count toward users’ regular usage caps — which for free-tier users, typically means 20–30 conversations. Additionally, certain productivity integrations are gated behind premium plans. Only paid Claude users can connect voice mode to Google Calendar and Gmail, and Google Docs integration remains exclusive to Claude Enterprise plans.

Anthropic’s move aligns with a broader industry shift toward more natural AI interactions. OpenAI offers voice chat in ChatGPT, Google has Gemini Live, and Elon Musk’s xAI supports voice with Grok. These innovations aim to make talking to AI feel more human and frictionless.

Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, Mike Krieger, hinted at the voice mode earlier this year. The company was reportedly in discussions with Amazon and ElevenLabs, among others, to explore deeper voice AI capabilities. However, no official details have emerged about whether those partnerships materialized.

As voice becomes a key interface for AI, Anthropic’s new mode brings Claude one step closer to being a true conversational companion — not just in writing, but in voice as well.
