Apple Prepares to Launch AirTag 2.0

Apple is set to release the second generation of its AirTag tracking device in mid-2025, introducing significant privacy enhancements and technical upgrades. According to a report by Mark Gurman in Bloomberg's "Power On" newsletter, the upcoming AirTag will feature a design that makes it more difficult to disable the built-in speaker, a measure aimed at preventing misuse for unauthorized tracking.

The current AirTag includes a speaker that emits sounds to alert individuals of its presence, a feature intended to deter unwanted tracking. However, concerns have arisen over the ease with which the speaker can be disabled, undermining this safety measure. The forthcoming design aims to address this issue by making the speaker less accessible for tampering.

In addition to privacy improvements, the new AirTag is expected to offer enhanced range capabilities and an upgraded wireless chip, potentially improving its tracking accuracy and efficiency. Despite these internal changes, the device's external appearance is anticipated to remain similar to the current model.

Since its introduction, the AirTag has been a popular tool for locating personal items. However, reports of misuse for stalking have prompted Apple to implement various safety features, including sound alerts and notifications for nearby unknown AirTags. The upcoming hardware modifications reflect Apple's ongoing commitment to user safety and privacy.

As the mid-2025 release approaches, further details about the AirTag 2.0 are expected to emerge, providing consumers with more information on its features and improvements.
