Apple’s Smarter Siri Takes on ChatGPT
Apple is developing a significant update to Siri, aiming to enhance its conversational abilities to compete with AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini Live. This initiative, known internally as "LLM Siri," involves integrating advanced large language models (LLMs) to enable more natural and context-aware interactions.
The planned enhancements include improved handling of complex tasks and better integration with third-party applications through App Intents. Additionally, Siri is expected to gain capabilities such as text summarization and composition, leveraging Apple's AI advancements.
Apple intends to announce these developments as early as next year, with a full overhaul of Siri's underlying software anticipated by spring 2026. Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, has indicated that the AI-enhanced Siri will offer unique advantages over existing models like ChatGPT, including the ability to perform practical tasks swiftly and locally on the device.
Recently, Apple introduced ChatGPT integration into Siri with the iOS 18.2 beta, and more features are planned for next year, including Siri's ability to understand on-screen content and perform in-app actions.
This strategic move underscores Apple's commitment to advancing its AI capabilities and enhancing user experience through more sophisticated and responsive virtual assistants.
