OpenAI is taking another step toward making AI feel more human. On Thursday, the company began rolling out a new memory feature for ChatGPT that allows the chatbot to remember details from previous conversations, making interactions more personal, consistent, and fluid.

The update, appearing under ChatGPT’s settings as “reference saved memories,” enables the AI to tailor its responses based on past interactions. Whether users are chatting via text, voice, or image prompts, ChatGPT will now be able to reference relevant past details to provide more contextual, accurate, and helpful replies.

Rolling Out to Paid Users First

Initially, the memory feature is being released to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers—excluding users in the U.K., EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. OpenAI cited the need for additional regulatory reviews in those regions but confirmed it plans to expand the rollout once compliance is achieved.

Free-tier users will have to wait. “We are focused on the rollout to paid tiers for now,” said an OpenAI spokesperson.

A Step Toward Seamless Conversations

This memory functionality is designed to eliminate the need to constantly repeat yourself to ChatGPT. It remembers key facts you share—like your name, preferences, or ongoing projects—and uses that information to shape future responses. Google introduced a similar memory feature in its Gemini chatbot earlier this year, signaling a broader industry move toward more personalized AI tools.

Privacy and Control

While the idea of AI storing personal info may raise privacy concerns, OpenAI offers users control over what gets remembered. In the settings, users can disable the memory feature entirely or manage individual memories. There's also a “Temporary Chat” mode for conversations that won’t be saved at all.

Users can even ask ChatGPT what it remembers and instruct it to forget specific details—features OpenAI introduced last year, but which previously required manual prompts.

For those who already had ChatGPT’s memory feature enabled in the past, the new system will be turned on by default.

What's Next

As AI tools become more embedded in daily workflows, features like this push the boundaries of what "personal assistant" really means. With contextual memory, ChatGPT takes another step toward becoming not just a chatbot—but a companion that actually remembers you.
