Elon Musk’s Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, is experiencing explosive growth, with global internet traffic more than tripling in 2024, according to Cloudflare data. As Starlink rapidly expands across the globe, it’s becoming increasingly visible on planes, cruise ships, and RVs, revolutionizing connectivity for travelers and remote regions alike.

Rapid Global Expansion

Starlink’s network of thousands of low-earth orbit satellites has enabled its expansion into new countries, including Chad, Mongolia, and Argentina. The service has seen particularly impressive growth in areas with “pent-up demand” for alternative internet services. For instance, traffic in Georgia and Paraguay, where Starlink launched in late 2023, surged by 100x and 900x, respectively.

Taking Over Planes and Cruises

Starlink’s rapid adoption in aviation and maritime sectors has been a game changer.

  • United Airlines announced in September that it will offer free Starlink WiFi on all flights starting in 2025.
  • Hawaiian Airlines began offering Starlink WiFi earlier this year, followed by Qatar Airways, whose service has been praised for its fast speeds.

On the seas, Carnival Cruises equipped its entire fleet with Starlink in May 2024, joining other major cruise liners in enhancing passenger connectivity.

Mobile Connectivity for RVs

In June, SpaceX launched Starlink Mini, a portable, laptop-sized satellite dish, alongside its "Roam" mobile package. This allows RV owners, van-life travelers, and off-grid enthusiasts to stay connected wherever they go.

A Key Driver for SpaceX’s Valuation

Starlink’s growth has cemented it as a central pillar of SpaceX’s business model. Reports suggest SpaceX is in discussions to sell shares at a valuation of $350 billion, nearly doubling its value from $175 billion at the end of 2023. This would make it one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

Looking Ahead

Starlink’s continued success highlights its role in bridging the digital divide, connecting underserved regions, and enhancing travel experiences. With its traffic booming for the second consecutive year, Starlink is set to become even more ubiquitous in the years to come.
