For a brief window on Saturday, some users of Elon Musk's social platform, X, gained access to Aurora, a new photorealistic image generator powered by Grok, Musk's AI model. While the tool hasn’t been widely released yet, its test performance revealed significant improvements over its predecessor, Flux, and drew comparisons to OpenAI’s DALL·E 3.

What Makes Aurora Stand Out?

Aurora's image generation appears far more detailed and realistic than Flux’s outputs, marking a clear advancement in xAI’s capabilities. Users who briefly accessed the model shared creations that included:

  • Actors Ray Romano and Adam Sandler on a sitcom set.
  • A depiction of Musk boxing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

These images quickly gained praise online for their quality and realism, though telltale signs of AI generation—like odd proportions in hands and facial smoothness—remained noticeable.

Fewer Restrictions, More Controversy

Reports suggest Aurora, like Flux, has fewer creative limitations compared to other image models.

  • TechCrunch noted that Aurora generated images of copyrighted characters like Mickey Mouse and public figures, including controversial depictions such as a "bloodied Donald Trump."
  • Unlike some AI systems, Aurora only stopped short of creating explicit content.

For comparison, Grok's older Flux model also created copyrighted images but refused violent imagery when tested by Business Insider.

AI Acceleration Without Limits?

The release sparked discussions about AI ethics and development speed. Guillaume Verdon, founder of the AI startup Extropic and a supporter of the effective accelerationism movement, praised the drop:

“X AI casually releasing one of the best image models on a Saturday at 2am... @xai y'all are built different.”

Musk, responding to Verdon, clarified:

“Just the beta version, but it will improve very fast.”

What’s Next for Aurora?

While Aurora hasn’t been fully rolled out, the beta release signals Musk’s push for rapid AI advancements through xAI. By integrating photorealistic image generation with X, Musk positions the platform to compete directly with OpenAI's DALL·E 3 and other leading models.

However, questions about content moderation, copyright infringement, and ethical limits remain open as Aurora continues to develop.

As Musk promised, "it will improve very fast"—meaning the next iterations could set a new benchmark for AI-generated imagery.
