Huawei challenges Nvidia’s H100 with new AI chip

Huawei is setting its sights on Nvidia’s stronghold in the AI hardware market with the development of a new advanced chip, the Ascend 910D. The Chinese tech giant is making significant progress on the chip and has begun reaching out to domestic partners to test it.
The Ascend 910D is designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s powerful H100 GPUs, which are widely used for training cutting-edge AI models. Huawei’s move comes at a critical time, as U.S. trade restrictions have tightened, further limiting China’s access to high-end AI chips from American suppliers.
If successful, the Ascend 910D could fill a growing void in the Chinese AI ecosystem, offering an alternative to Nvidia’s hardware and helping Chinese tech firms continue advancing their AI ambitions without relying on foreign technology.
The race to produce competitive AI chips has intensified globally, with companies like Huawei, Alibaba, and Baidu working to establish homegrown solutions amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
