Kohl's Closing 27 Stores by April

Retail giant Kohl’s has announced plans to close 27 underperforming stores across 15 states by April. The move comes as the Wisconsin-based retailer works to address challenges in recent quarters, including what former CEO Tom Kingsbury described as "frankly disappointing" sales. Kingsbury stepped down from his role on January 15.

A Small Fraction of a Large Fleet

Despite the closures, the 27 affected locations represent a small portion of Kohl’s more than 1,150 stores across the United States. The company maintains that its overall store fleet remains healthy, strong, and profitable. Kohl’s described the decision as part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term success of the business.

“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams,” Kingsbury said in a statement.

E-Commerce Fulfillment Center to Close

In addition to the store closures, Kohl’s will shut down its e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California. The company cited advancements in newer fulfillment centers and store-based order fulfillment capabilities as reasons for the closure of the 15-year-old facility.

Support for Affected Employees

Kohl’s stated that employees impacted by the closures will have the opportunity to apply for other roles within the company or receive a competitive severance package.
