Patreon is stepping directly into Twitch territory with the launch of a native livestreaming feature, allowing creators to host live video directly on the platform for the first time. Starting this week, select creators will get early access to the feature, with a broader rollout planned for summer 2025.

The new livestreaming capability will allow creators to go live via Patreon’s mobile app or desktop, choosing whether to offer streams for free or limit access to paid subscribers. Patreon is also adding live chat and moderation tools, along with support for popular third-party tools like OBS and Streamlabs — making the platform more competitive for streamers used to Twitch and YouTube.

In addition to live broadcasts, creators will have the option to share video recordings (VODs) or sell them as one-time purchases, opening up new revenue streams within Patreon’s ecosystem.

“We’re testing all of these features between now and our wider rollout of live video,” said Patreon spokesperson Adiya Taylor. “We’ll continue to refine based on feedback from creators.”

According to Taylor, thousands of creators will be part of the initial test group — particularly those who have actively used Patreon’s chat, video hosting, or off-platform livestreaming tools in the past.

Patreon’s move comes as competition intensifies in the creator economy space. Substack also entered livestreaming recently, launching its feature to all publishers earlier this year. Meanwhile, Patreon had already begun expanding beyond static posts with its long-awaited video hosting tool.

This latest development positions Patreon not just as a funding platform, but as a full-fledged content hub — giving creators more tools to engage their audiences directly and monetize in-platform, without needing to rely on third-party services.
