In a significant move for the artificial intelligence industry, SoftBank Group and OpenAI have launched a joint venture, SB OpenAI Japan, aimed at accelerating AI adoption in Japan. The 50-50 partnership was unveiled on Monday, with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sharing their vision for AI-driven business transformation at an event in Tokyo.

Cristal: SoftBank’s AI Assistant for Business

At the heart of SoftBank’s AI push is Cristal, a next-generation AI service designed to enhance corporate efficiency. Son introduced Cristal while holding a shiny blue crystal ball, symbolizing the clarity and foresight AI can bring to decision-making.

Cristal will initially be deployed within SoftBank’s own ecosystem, including Arm, a leader in semiconductor technology, and PayPay, a digital payment platform. SoftBank plans to invest $3 billion annually to integrate Cristal across its businesses, making it a core component of its operations.

Son described Cristal as "superintelligence for the company", emphasizing its ability to assist in planning, marketing, emails, and deciphering old source codes—a challenge many companies face when working with legacy systems.

OpenAI’s Deep Research: Enhancing AI Capabilities

Sam Altman introduced "deep research," a new feature for ChatGPT that allows it to conduct complex, multi-source research far faster than human analysts. This capability will be available in Japan, fully optimized for the Japanese language, enabling businesses to leverage AI for more advanced problem-solving and data analysis.

“This partnership with SoftBank will accelerate our vision for bringing transformative AI to some of the world’s most influential companies, starting with Japan,” Altman stated.

Stargate Project: AI Expansion in the U.S. and Beyond

Beyond their Japan-focused initiative, SoftBank and OpenAI are also part of the Stargate project, a U.S.-backed AI infrastructure initiative. Supported by former President Donald Trump, Stargate is set to receive up to $500 billion in investment to bolster AI capabilities in the U.S. Son confirmed plans to expand Stargate into Japan and other nations, positioning SoftBank as a global AI leader.

Competition from DeepSeek: China’s Low-Cost AI Challenger

While SoftBank and OpenAI drive AI innovation, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has recently emerged as a formidable competitor. DeepSeek claims to offer highly advanced AI at a significantly lower cost, posing a potential challenge to established players in the AI industry.

What's Next

SoftBank’s aggressive AI strategy, backed by OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology, signals a major shift in the Japanese corporate sector. With Cristal’s enterprise focus, deep research capabilities, and a global AI expansion plan, SoftBank and OpenAI are aiming to reshape how businesses leverage AI. However, with rising competition from China’s DeepSeek, the AI race is far from over.
