Tesla has issued a major recall affecting 46,096 Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to a faulty piece of exterior trim that may detach while the vehicle is in motion—posing a serious safety risk to other drivers. The recall, filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), applies to every Cybertruck manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025.

The issue centers around the cant rail, a cosmetic steel applique along the exterior of the Cybertruck. Tesla reports that the component was secured using an adhesive found to be vulnerable to environmental embrittlement, potentially causing it to come loose or fly off during driving. Although only about 1% of affected vehicles are believed to have the defect, the safety implications prompted immediate action.

This marks the eighth recall for the Cybertruck since its highly anticipated launch in December 2023. A similar trim-related recall occurred last summer concerning the truck bed, where loose panels also presented potential road hazards.

Tesla has already paused Cybertruck deliveries in response to complaints and online reports. Owners and teardown experts like Reid Tomasko and Cody Detwiler (a.k.a. WhistlinDiesel) have highlighted the issue in forums and YouTube videos, bringing additional visibility to the problem.

The latest recall follows 151 warranty claims believed to be tied to the defect, though Tesla states there have been no known injuries, accidents, or fatalities related to the trim failure.

As part of the fix, Tesla will replace the cant rail on all recalled vehicles free of charge. The new process involves applying a more durable adhesive and securing the panel with a nut and clamp to ensure it stays attached.

The incident adds to growing scrutiny of Tesla’s quality control practices and comes amid wider criticism of the company's handling of safety issues and product launches. As Tesla pushes forward with its futuristic vehicle vision, the Cybertruck continues to face real-world durability challenges that may test consumer confidence.
