Uber’s First Global Robotaxi Rolls Out in Abu Dhabi
Uber has launched its first international robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in partnership with Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide. This initiative allows customers to book self-driving cars through the Uber app at standard UberX and Uber Comfort rates. Initially, these vehicles will have safety drivers onboard, with plans to transition to fully autonomous rides by 2025.
WeRide, headquartered in Guangzhou, China, operates the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE and holds the country's sole national license for self-driving vehicles, permitting testing and operations on public roads nationwide. The company has been testing autonomous vehicles in the UAE since July 2023.
This collaboration marks a significant step in Uber's strategy to integrate autonomous vehicles from various operators worldwide. While there are no immediate plans to extend this partnership beyond the UAE, Uber continues to explore similar collaborations globally. The company has existing agreements with Cruise, Waymo, Motional, and Serve Robotics for autonomous passenger and delivery services.
The introduction of robotaxis in Abu Dhabi reflects the UAE's commitment to adopting advanced technologies and enhancing urban mobility. As the service evolves, it is expected to expand to more areas within the city, offering residents and visitors a glimpse into the future of transportation.
